Sleep Apnea affects your night time breathing. Common sleep breathing is rhythmic but the person that has a form of Apnea will have an interrupted breathing pattern. The interruption can last from a few seconds to a few minutes; this can happen many times in one rest period. Sleep Apnea is one of the leading causes of day time sleepiness as the interruption can you pull you out of the deep rest full sleep many times.

There are typically two types of Sleep Apnea, one is from a blockage in the nasal passage limiting air flow and is often accompanied by snoring or snorting upon regaining breath. This is also common in people that are overweight. The other type of Apnea is actually when the brain does not communicate properly with the breathing muscles, there is usually not snoring associated with this type of Apnea as there is no blockage for the air to travel over or through, hence no snoring noise.

Preventing Sleep Apnea can be pretty tricky if you live alone as it usually is only noticed or recognized by your partner. Some simple things that anyone can do to help prevent the collapse aspect of Apnea are resisting the urge to sleep on your back. Sleeping on your side will help avoid the effects of gravity and my give you and your partner a better night sleep. If you have a weight problem there is a very real possibility that losing weight will have a tremendous benefit on your sleep in general not to mention relieving the added pressure of the Apnea.

There are also some devices on the market that are specifically designed to help with snoring. Snoring is only a symptom of the blockage, if the snoring is relieved you can almost bet that the Apnea will be less active; remember snoring occurs because of blocked air passages. This can be done by taking over the counter remedies or using pressure devices on your nasal passages.

There are natural herbs that can be used to help alleviate Sleep Apnea. Melatonin has been used for a natural sleep aid for many years, this helps you go to sleep and keep you in the deeper, more restful sleep state. Using flower herbs and teas can be of great benefit for reducing swelling and relaxing problem areas. Combining these remedies with actions you can take, like sleeping on your side instead of your back, relief can be closer than you think.

Sleep Apnea can cause some very serious health risks, if you think that you have a severe case then consult a medical professional before attempting to control it on your own. These techniques can be added in to your medical treatment with your doctor’s approval.
